Basic Situation (Основная ситуация):
You find out when your new friend was born; when he (she) entered and left school, studied at the university, started work; how large his (her) family is; you answer similar questions.

Is Mr Ball’s family big? – Yes, rather. There are seven of them.
Is your sister married yet? – Not yet. But she’s engaged.
Is your elder brother married? – No, he isn’t. He says he isn’t going to.

Is Mr Gray single or married? – Oh, he is an old bachelor.
Is she single or married? – She is a widow.
Is Ann single or married? – She is divorced. (Her husband has divorced her. She and her husband have separated.)

I. Прочитайте несколько раз в парах следующие диалоги, отражающие различные варианты основной ситуации. Постарайтесь воспроизвести их по памяти, лишь изредка заглядывая в текст.

A: I’d like to know you better, Tony. How old are you?
B: I’m twenty-eight.
A: Oh, you look much younger.
B: Thank you. In fact you are the first person who tells me that. Everybody thinks I’m older.

A: When were you born, Boris?
B: On the 10th of September 1959.
A: You are almost half my age.
B: Oh, is it really possible? You look so young!
A: Well, you can look at my date of birth in my passport. Here you are.
B: Honestly, you don’t look your age, really.

Professor: When was Charles Dickens born?
Student: In the XIXth century… Well, I don’t know exactly.
Professor: And do you know when George Bernard Shaw was born?
Student: I’m afraid I can’t remember that either.
Professor: You should know such dates if you want to become an English teacher.

Husband: Now we have to fill in this form. Well, to-day’s date is (writing down) 18 August 2011. Name. Smith Paul and Nancy. Nationality. British. Date of birth. Mine is 11 December 1965. Yours? When were you born, Nancy?
Wife: Stop joking, Paul. You know pretty well when I was born.
Husband: Ah yes. 22 August 1962. Let’s go on. Place of birth. I was born in Leeds. You? I can never remember that place.
Wife: You are talking too much, Paul. Put down, Llanwern.
Husband: Thank you. That’s all. We are through with it.

A: Many happy returns, Susan!
B: Thank you, Tom. I’m very glad you have come. I only mentioned the date of my birthday. I didn’t expect you remember it.
A: I remembered it as you see, Susan. Now here’s a long-playing record for your birthday present. It’s Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.
B: Oh, thank you very much. It’s just what I always wanted.

A: Is your family big, Mr Morton?
B: Not very. To be exact, very small. I’m single.
A: You have never married, have you?
B: No. In fact I’m a bachelor.
A: I hope you don’t mind my asking, but aren’t you thinking of marrying some day?
B: That’s all right, Mr Glen. Well, one can never tell.

A: Is your family large, Mrs Hall?
B: Yes, rather. I have a husband and three children. I have also a mother but she lives in another town.
A: Are your children grown yet?
B: Oh yes. The elder son, Paul, works at a factory, our daughter, Nancy, studies at a Secretarial College, and the younger son, Alan, is finishing school.

A: Tell me, Nancy, do your children work yet? What do they do?
B: Well, John is a driver and Ann works in a hospital.
A: Do they help you much about the house?
B: Not very much. They come home very tired. Anyhow John likes to do something in the garden on Sunday and Ann cleans the rooms, does some shopping and cooking.

A: You say you have an elder sister. What’s her name?
B: Katrine, Kate for short. She was named after our granny (grandmother). Father wanted her to be named after his mother.
A: Really? Isn’t that funny? We both have sisters and each of them is called Katrine.
B: Well, Kate is quite a popular British name just as Katya is with Russians.
A: I’d like to introduce them to each other some day.

a) Exclamations:

1. There are many things which Olga (a student of the Department of Languages and Literature) likes and there are some which she doesn’t. She doesn’t like talking much. She usually tells people things straight to their face. She doesn’t like mixing with fellow students. It’s hard for her to make friends with people. She doesn’t like crowds. She likes to stay at home reading or listening in. Anyhow Olga doesn’t think all this is good for her career.

4. Describe each member of the family: indicating his or her name, age, place of birth, occupation, plans for the future.
5. Say a few words about relations between the members of your family.
